Our Oceans: Vast Unknown Areas
The U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is larger than all 50 states combined.
Less than half of this area has been mapped.
Far less has been explored and studied.
The Challenges of Ocean Exploration
The conditions for working in the ocean environment are difficult and dangerous—such as remote locations, extreme pressures, zero visibility, freezing temperatures, rough weather.
Very few specialized assets worldwide have the capability to conduct deep-sea research. Vessel operations for ocean research is extremely costly.
Increasing Responsibilities
At the same time, our environmental work continues to grow as programs and acreage have been added. Innovation, collaboration, and process improvements are critical for helping us continue to meet the increasing responsibilities. BOEM has a history of using funds and resources efficiently to find solutions for durable decisions.
