Studies enable BOEM scientists to identify and manage mineral resources while evaluating and minimizing the environmental impacts of exploration and extraction activities.
Research Approach
The Marine Minerals Program (MMP) partners with federal agencies, state and local governments, regional planning bodies, industry and private sector, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, tribes, and the public to conduct research. The MMP funds two types of research: Resource Evaluation and Environmental. To share our research, you can browse our library of electronic reports:
Our BOEM scientists use the Resource Evaluation Research to gather and analyze data to find and manage important marine minerals like sand and sediment. For example, our geologists locate, define, and design the best areas for sand extraction while addressing potential conflicts over land use.
Our Environmental Research examines the effects of mineral exploration and extraction. This research informs plans (e.g., mitigation measures) to minimize any negative impacts on the environment. The plans are included in terms to ensure the safe exploration or extraction of sand, gravel, and other minerals.
