This is a friendly reminder that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary would like to invite you to tour the SRVx Sand Tiger on Saturday, July 18, 2015, anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
You will have the unique opportunity to meet marine archaeologists and scientific divers from BOEM, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to learn more about their most recent mission to explore potential shipwrecks offshore Ocean City.
The SRVx Sand Tiger, a 90 foot research vessel, will be docked at the Governor's Pier. The nearest intersection to the pier is Sunset Avenue and Golf Course Road, Ocean City, MD 21842.
We hope to see you there!
BOEM is responsible for overseeing renewable energy activities on the Outer Continental Shelf, including offshore wind energy development.
BOEM has recently issued two commercial wind energy leases for the "Maryland Wind Energy Area," an area about 10 nautical miles offshore Ocean City. BOEM is seeking baseline data for this area in order to minimize potential impacts from development and fulfill its responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
To meet these needs, BOEM invited Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to collaborate on an archaeological survey near and within the Maryland Wind Energy Area. The survey will be conducted July 7-17, 2015.
The survey data obtained will help BOEM make informed decisions with respect to protected submerged historic resources that may be affected by commercial wind energy development. The results will be used to decide whether identified geophysical targets are actually historic resources that should be protected under NHPA.
