The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) was recognized by the Association of Environmental Professionals (AEP) for its study report, Inventory and Analysis of Coastal and Submerged Archaeological Site Occurrence on the Pacific Outer Continental Shelf. The report earned AEP’s Outstanding Environmental Resource Document Award. This is the latest in a series of reports from BOEM-funded analyses that seek to identify potentially significant archaeological and cultural resources on the Pacific Outer Continental Shelf. The report was prepared for BOEM by ICF International, SEARCH, Inc., and Davis Geoarchaeological Research.
BOEM Pacific Region marine archaeologist David Ball accepted the environmental award from organization officials during an award ceremony at the 2015 AEP Conference held March 22-25, 2015 in Santa Barbara, California.
The report provides baseline information on archaeological sites, historic and traditional cultural properties, and potential culturally sensitive submerged landforms from the U.S./Mexican border to the U.S./Canadian border, from 1 mile inland along the coast and extending seaward 200 miles to the end of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). BOEM will use the resource document in evaluating future exploration, development, and transportation plans for offshore renewable energy projects. The report can be accessed through BOEM’s Environmental Studies Program Information System at https://espis.boem.gov/final%20reports/5357.pdf.
The California AEP, a local chapter of the national organization, was founded in 1974 as a non-profit association of public and private-sector professionals with a common interest in serving the principles underlying the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). With over 1,700 members statewide, AEP’s members represent a broad cross-section of scientific and technical disciplines integral to the environmental review process and the implementation of California’s most important environmental laws. AEP is committed to improving the processing and implementation of environmental assessment, analysis, public disclosure, and reporting.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) promotes energy independence, environmental protection, and economic development through responsible, science-based management of offshore conventional and renewable energy resources.
